Marketing is the big mystery to me. Or more accurately, it’s the big ADD walk-away part of my projects. Once a thing is done and made, for me it’s finished…. That subsequent piece of showing and sharing the thing is almost distasteful… I don’t care. Hmmmmm, I’ve said “I don’t care” quite often in reference to games and sales…
I have been accused of being aloof and stuck up. But it’s not contempt or superiority, my mind literally walks away from the prospect of certain activities. I will light upon a distraction rather than engage in what feels to me like painful and boring homework. But now I have to face this thing. I have to market CanCan. I have to care. I do care.
So I am seeking my “market”. What is this thing called “market”? The market is the people who will buy what you’re selling, yes? It is the subset of humans who, in marketing parlance, have a need that your thing will fulfill. They may not know they have this need, it is up to the marketer to demonstrate to them that they do. And herein lies my problem.
But there is an easier way. I made my game for ME. First I made a system to understand something (read the Story of CanCan)…then, noticing it would and could never be static, I made a game out of it…then in the end I used and use it to self-soothe.
As I have often said, I never liked playing games as a child.
Why is that?
Well, hmmmmm.
Because by the time I was 8 or so, I was very solitary.
I was depressed (I know now).
No engagement with others quite penetrated this depression and solitariness.
I avoided my sisters.
I perfected a mask of cheerfulness and funniness.
I hid.
I was most comfortable alone with nobody bothering me, thinking.
Staring out the window.
I went to nature for company.
I lacked the resiliency of social give and take, and I still do.
So games where the lust for winning and the “agony of defeat” were required held no currency for me. It was all I could do just to leave the house. There was a time when I could literally not handle a conversation of more than five minutes…
So. If I had had a game like CanCan when I was young, it would have engaged me, because color and beauty are so arresting and healing in their own right. It would have been something I could do by myself. It would have been a game I could play with other kids without it being so likely to topple my precarious emotional balance. It would have soothed me.
so my market is intelligent, hypersensitive, phobic, possibly depressed, children and adults? Girls or boys? Well, girls, and sensitive boys… I think it divides less on gender lines and more on nervous system lines…more soon.
Your thoughts?
